Welcome to Piru Garage
This website Piru Garage is a website dedicated to old guys, old cars, interesting car stories, and good and bad restorations. Not necessarily in that order.
It’s intended to be a fun place to visit for guys and girls that have an interest in pre-1990 automobiles. But mostly our focus is on pre-1970 cars. You’ll also find a sprinkling of automobiles and stories from the 1920s to the 1970s.
The guy that runs this website is a guy named Tommie . And yes, he currently lives in Piru, California. Throughout his many years he has owned several businesses one of which was called, you guessed it, Piru Garage.
How old is he? Well he’s old enough to have sat on Henry Ford I’s lap as a child. Other than that he’s not talking, figuring out his age can be the Math problem for this website. How this interesting event/events came about is a long story, suffice it to say that he was born, where else, Dearborn, Michigan. With his dad he visited Park Lane on some Saturday, down the long dirt road heading north from Michigan Ave.
We need to talk a little bit about cars. I’ve had a whole bunch of cars in my life, got my first car when I was 11 or 12 years old, a 1937 Ford two-door slant back. Yes, yes, yes it was black, and there’s a great story about it. O’ I’ve owned more than 5000 cars in my life and I’ve enjoyed them immensely. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I usually refer to them as junk, sleds, and iron. It’s up to you to figure out which cars qualify for each category.
Now a little about the stories that you will find on this website. I cannot vouch for anybody that post a story on this website. However, I can assure you that the stories that I tell are 99.44% pure. (Kind of like Ivory Soap, if you know what I mean) You see I came to California for two reasons: 1) there was snow in Michigan and it was cold, and I didn’t want to be cold and 2) when it snowed in Michigan they put salt on the roads, and the salt eats away the metal on cars.
I’ve had a love affair with cars since I was eight years old. When I saw what rust could do to the object of my affection I made plans to leave Michigan as soon as possible. Sure it took me another eight or nine years, but I moved to Southern California, where its warm and they don’t put salt on the roads, to follow my automotive dreams in the sun.
Most of the stories are about people and places in the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Orange County, Saugus ( Saugus Speedway) Pasadena, Long Beach (Lions Drag Strip) Santa Monica, Irwindale, (605 Speedway, Irwindale Speedway) San Fernando. (San Fernando Dragstrip) and Gardena, (Ascot Park).
Remember, as we all found out in “Ripley’s Believe it or Not”, truth is stranger than fiction. You will notice that some of the stories on this website are pretty unbelievable but rest assured they are true. Yes, even the one about the electric powered tricycle beating the Corvette in a Drag Race.
